Course Description

This film series will explore the experience of women through the lens of other cultures, through stories that reveal their ability to overcome the challenges life throws at them at any age. All films will be shown in their entirety. Titles are subject to change.

Lectures

  1. “The Scent of Green Papaya,” Vietnam/France - 1993: A Vietnamese servant girl, observes lives within two different Saigon families while growing to womanhood: the first, involves a woman textile seller with three boys and a frequently absent husband; the second, a handsome young pianist with his fiancée.
  2. "Chile '76," Chile - 2022: During the Pinochet regime, Carmen, while re-doing her beach house, is asked by the local priest to care for a young man; she steps into unexplored territory.
  3. "Return to Seoul," France - 2022 – Exploring universal truths about the human condition, a young Korean woman who was adopted by French parents, embarks on a journey to a country she knows little about to learn her true identity. 
  4. "Revoir Paris," France - 2022: Three months after surviving a terrorist attack in a bistro, Mia is still traumatized and unable to recall the events of that night. In an effort to move forward, she investigates her memories and retraces her steps.

About the Instructor

  • Shelly Isaacs, M.A. is founder and host for Café Cinematheque International, a foreign language film program presented in venues throughout South Florida. As a creative director/writer/producer and director in advertising, Isaacs specialized in promoting movies & entertainment. He earned a master's degree in media ecology studies from New York University, and taught graduate-level courses in cultural studies. In 2009 he launched Cinematheque at Sea, a film program available on luxury cruises throughout the world.
